Recently MULTI ELECTRIC’s mother company OCEM Airfield implemented its Led Elevated Runway Lights LERE at French based Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. The light was preferred by the airport because of its low Intensity omnidirectional component (>50Cd) which can operate from 2.8A to 6.6A as part of the circling guidance application.

As recommended in the ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual part 4, it light emission covers 0 to 360° in Azimuth and 0 to 15° elevation.

Why is this element so important?

This functionality improves the overall visibility of the runway during the approach and circling procedures.

Getting the aircraft safely onto the runway at the destination is surely the primary task of every pilot and guaranteeing a visual guidance in all weather conditions is of the utmost importance.  That is why the circling guidance application is often a must have for airports.

To answer the needs of the airport and many others our R&D team Airfield developed a new version of the omnidirectional component and offers it as a part of its Elevated Runway Light LERE.

This new option is capable to provide a luminous emission compliant with the requirements for circling guidance by ICAO at all brightness steps and not only at max intensity, rendering this feature available to pilots in all lighting conditions.

Not a simple design….

Designing the update to an existing light requires some development work since the solution impacts different elements including mechanics, electronics and of course the optics.

It is not a simple activity in which we can just add one component to fulfill the safety needs expressed by airports and pilots. But the result is a great added value to the safety of airports and one of the many innovations MULTI ELECTRIC and OCEM Airfield push out to the market.
